We are looking for ways that we can stop the senseless violence plaguing our communities, neighborhoods, states, nations, and world!  Read this article I posted on my Tallahassee Democrat Community Blog and please let’s brainstorm some ideas, strategies, and ways we can Stop the Violence, Please!  For More Information Visit: http://blogs.tallahassee.com/community/2012/07/12/life-lesson-stop-the-violence-please/

Things that we can do to stop the violence:

1.         It starts with education.  We must educate our families and communities about the issues surrounding violence   highlighting ways to handle conflict.  We must also talk about safety measures and precautions.

2.         Gun control is needed to limit the amount of guns available to people who may use them to harm others, especially certain types of guns and weaponry that is considered extremely dangerous and unnecessary for civilian use.

3.         More compassion is needed with greater respect and niceness among people.

4.         More guns and less control are needed for citizens to be able to protect themselves from potential killers.

5.         We need to have dialogue and ongoing discussions about violence prevention as a part of our local and national agendas not just when tragedy strikes but all the time.

6.         There is a need for profiles to be developed with ways to identify potential violent prone individuals.  There is also a need for strategies to help these individuals and prevent them from tipping over the edge.

7.         As my one commenter suggested, we need to pray for our families, communities, nation, and world.

Lea Lightburn · Florida State University

Pastor, Dr. Tompkins, I touch and agree with you for a spiritual wall against the enemy on violence in our communities. We must start at home teaching love, not hate; and humility, not greed. Families must spend time praying, we know that this is just the work of the enemy to destroy families. Too many young people dying way too soon. Thank you for this article, saints have sat by way too long, and now we must STAND against the enemy and decree the blood of Jesus to bind the hands of the enemy against our children and our families. Even if it’s 15min each day, God will hear and will answer. God bless you for your caring heart, Pastor Rosalind.

What Is A Humanitarian?

Declaration of Humanitarian Rosalind Y. Tompkins
A Humanitarian is a person focused on promoting human welfare and social reform, a person focused on human nature and human affairs, and humanities, a person devoted to bemoaning the welfare of humanity and especially to the elimination of pain and suffering within the community; and we are so blessed to have Pastor Rosalind Y. Tompkins receive this degree today. She has definitely earned it over the course of her over twenty years of service to mankind….As a matter of fact she has been recognized as a great humanitarian on many occasions by the local chapter of the NAACP and other community service organizations for her efforts to end drug and alcohol addiction and to relieve the suffering of families afflicted by the disease of addiction. She is a woman who is concerned about the welfare of our community.

Over a span of twenty plus years Pastor Rosalind Y. Tompkins has helped thousands of families; her classroom is the actual life experiences of her own and the lives of others and her dissertation consists of her four published books (“As Long As There Is Breath In Your Body, There Is Hope”, “Rare Anointing”, “You Are Beautiful” “Girl Get Your Fight Back”), detailing the wisdom that she has gained. She has earned this degree through great personal sacrifices. Just as Jesus said, “Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends.”

A Humanitarian is a person showing or constituting charitable, benevolent, humanity; it implies interest in general human welfare, especially as shown in large scale giving of charity, or endowment, in other words, freedom from selfishness. A humanitarian gives back just like Pastor Rosalind Y. Tompkins continues to do ever since she was delivered from drug and alcohol addiction over twenty-five years ago, she has been giving back.

It is a privilege to be able to say today a Doctorate Degree is given by and conferred upon Rosalind Y. Tompkins in the humanitarian realm entertaining that she has completed all her obligations and is committed to the welfare of mankind. The Five Fold Theological University hereby bestows this Theological Doctorate of Humanities Degree upon Rosalind Y. Tompkins this day of Sunday, June 24th 2012.

Should You Work From Home?

Are you currently employed outside of the home? If you are, do you regularly find yourself frustrated with the daily commute to and from work? Do you regularly find yourself fed up with workplace gossip or antics that may go on at your company workplace? If you do, have you ever considered working from home? If working from home is something that you have considered, you should know that you are not alone. Wanting to work from home is a dream that many have, but is that dream one that could become a reality or should it become a reality for you?

When it comes to working from home, there are many individuals who have a misconception. Yes, working from home can involve working from home in your ‘down,” clothes, but there is much more to working from home than comfort. Before you automatically decide to ask your current employer about working from home or quit your job so that you can work from home, you will want to continue reading on.

One of the hardest parts about working from home is finding a work-at-home job or a work-at-home opportunity. Unfortunately, this is where many individuals make costly mistakes. Many mistakenly quit their jobs with the belief that it would be relatively easy for them to find a paid work-at-home job or a paid work-at-home opportunity. As previously stated, working from home is something that is rapidly increasing in popularity. What does this mean for you? It means that it can be difficult for you to find a legitimate work-at-home job or work-at-home opportunity, as there is a lot of competition for doing so.

A limited number of jobs is why it is advised that you do not terminate your current position with your employer until you have a steady work-at-home job or work-at-home opportunity lined up. This will prevent you from suffering from financial difficulties, should you be unable to find a work-at-home job or work-at-home opportunity that pays. The good news about this approach is that the internet enables you to research and apply for work-at-home jobs and work-at-home opportunities at just about any point in time, including in the evenings or on the weekends. You may also want to consider asking your current employer if you are able to work from home. This will all depend on the preference of your employer, as well as your work duties.

Although there are a number of different ways that you can go about finding work-at-home jobs or work-at-home opportunities, it is important to remember that working from home isn’t right for everyone. One of the many factors that you will want to take into consideration is your ability to follow a schedule or have your project submitted by a deadline without constant monitoring from your supervisor. Working from home is nice, but it essentially becomes your own responsibility to stay focused and stay on task. For that reason, if you regularly find yourself distracted at home, working from home may not be right for you.

Another one of the many factors that you will want to take into consideration, when looking to work from home is the startup costs. These startup costs will all depend on which work-at-home opportunity you decide to take. For instance, if you choose to start your own business, you will find that your startup costs will be higher than if you were a home based worker for another company. Of course, it is important to make sure that you do have all needed equipment pieces. These pieces may include a computer, internet access, a second dedicated phone line, a fax machine, or a copy machine. The good news is that you may already have all or most of these items inside your home.

Additional factors that you will want to take into consideration include health insurance, as most home based workers are not covered with medical insurance, and childcare, if you are a parent. A close examination should help you determine whether or not working from home is best for you.

Grateful Heart

Having a grateful heart can be the difference between success and failure.  We often find ourselves in situations that are less than desirable.  It can be as small as getting the wrong order at a drive through restaurant or as  big as finding out you have cancer.  Whatever the case may be we know that life can deliver some twists and turns that can certainly throw us for a loop or knock us off our feet, no doubt!  When that happens we are left with two primary choices, either we get through it or give up.  When it’s the little things  it is easier to get over it.  But on a deep spiritual cellular level you may have not really gotten over it, because whether big or small it all gets down to  how you get through.  That is what makes all the difference.   You can either curse it or bless it.  The experience will be shaped by the way you perceive it and what you think and say about it.

Whenever you have a grateful heart you can give thanks even in the midst of calamity.  Thanks according to Webster’s dictionary means kindly or grateful thoughts, an expression of Gratitude!  One of the meanings of thanks in the Greek according to Strong’s Concordance means to confess, profess, acknowledge openly & joyfully, celebrate.  We must learn to have a grateful heart which comes from celebrating God, life and others in our thoughts.  When we do that we can profess and confess with our mouths, everyday.  While we may not be grateful for certain events or circumstances that we face, we can certainly find something to be thankful for and major on that and not the negative.

In the Bible we find that the children of Israel had a miserable experience after being delivered out of Egypt primarily because they majored on what they didn’t have and not what they were going to get.  They grumbled and complained all the way and it caused the journey to take longer with many dying in the wilderness.  Imagine how fast you could get to your destination in life just by having a grateful heart.

Five Characteristics of a Grateful Heart:

  1. Having an Attitude of Gratitude as opposed to a Spirit of Entitlement!
  2. Seeing the Good & Positive in Life and Majoring on that!
  3. Tuning out Negative Nay Sayers Inside & Outside your Head!
  4. Celebrating God, Life & Others!
  5. Thanking God for the good times, the happy times, & the sad times because we can learn from them ALL!

Recovery Is Possible

As  the death of Whitney Houston continues to stir up strong sentiments and emotions from many across the board, I have been very introspective in many regards after my initial outpouring of surprise and sorrow.  I like countless others watched a portion of the funeral of Ms. Houston and listened intently to her close family and friends sharing their memories and love for Whitney.  I too was reminded of how as I was driving my daughter to elementary school over ten years ago, we used to pray for Whitney on many occasions.  This was right after her infamous interview with Diane Sawyer.

We all can agree that God blessed Whitney Houston with an incredible voice and she was a beautiful gift to this world while she was here and will remain with us through song and cinema for years to come.

The big elephant in the room is Whitney Houston’s very public addiction and recovery in regards to her drug use.  While there is no official evidence stating that she died as a direct result of drug usage, pain killers were found at the scene of her death as well as alcohol which happens to be the number one drug abused in the world.  Many assume that her addiction was at the very least, a contributing factor to her early departure.

After mulling over these events I felt I must share what is on my heart concerning addiction and the fact that recovery is possible.  I have been in recovery from crack-cocaine, cocaine, marijuana, and alcohol addiction for well over twenty years now and I have devoted my life to helping others and sharing the fact that recovery is possible.  Over the past twenty years, thousands of women have been directly impacted by my testimony through my non-profit organization, Mothers In Crisis,Inc.  There is hardly a week that goes by that someone doesn’t tell me thanks for helping them to overcome their addiction.

The other day after church one of the ladies came to me with tears in her eyes and said, “It’s a shame about Whitney isn’t it?” and I said, “Yes.”  Earlier, I had mentioned her death during my sermon and led a prayer for Whitney’s family.  She then said to me, “I wish she could have met you, she may still be alive because I know you helped me and a lot of others get off of drugs.”  My heart stopped and I said as humbly as I know how, “Only God knows and He is in control and I am glad to have been a small part of your recovery.”

After she left I thought about how recovery is possible and we all recover in our own way.  With that being said there are certain implications of recovery that we must take into account.

IMPLICATIONS:

  1. ADDICTION IS A CHRONIC DISEASE!
  2. DELIVERANCE MUST TAKE PLACE ON ALL LEVELS: SPIRIT, SOUL, BODY!
  3. RELAPSE IS A PART OF THE RECOVERY PROCESS!
  4. RECOVERY IS A LIFE- LONG PROCESS!
  5. GOD HAS GIVEN US POWER & AUTHORITY OVER ALL BONDAGE!
  6. THE ANOINTING DESTROYS YOKES!
  7. PRAYER IS ESSENTIAL!

How To Collaborate

Collaboration is not just an option these days, it is a necessity!  With so many challenges economically we find that we can get more done with less time and money when we work together.  We also have the potential to earn more money when we collaborate well.  According to Miriam’s Dictionary “collaborate means to work jointly with others or together especially in an intellectual endeavor.”

The problem with collaboration is that oftentimes we do not know how to collaborate.  We jump into joint activities whether on a professional or personal level and several weeks or months into it we ask ourselves “What on earth have I gotten myself into?”

How to collaborate is actually more important than the collaboration itself.  I searched and I found that while there are various tools available to help lead us in the right direction, there is one book that has been around for thousands of years that tops them all, yes you guessed it, the Bible!

I would like to address Seven important factors in how to collaborate that will make all the difference in the world based upon principles found in the Bible.

  1. Agreement is a must!  You must agree on what you are working towards and the goals that you are trying to accomplish with the collaboration.  You can negotiate on the how but you must agree on the what or it will never work.
  2. Be careful who you team up with!  Make sure that you are not “unequally yoked” with others who do not believe as you do.  Faith is very important especially when you are talking about spiritual endeavors, therefore it is very important that you are walking in the same direction on the same path.
  3. Watch out for the green-eyed monster of jealousy!  Inevitably there will be times when you might feel inadequate or like the other person or team has more skills, luck, blessings, or whatever.  Also there may be times when your collaborative partner may began to feel inadequate like you have more skills, luck, blessings, or whatever.  This often leads to jollying for position, competition, or under-minded dealings.  Talk about it!  Whatever comes up, communication is key.  If jealousy is left to grow and fester the collaboration is over, destroyed, null and void and it then morphs into competition and you might just find yourself “sleeping with the enemy” so to speak because “jealousy is as cruel as the grave.”
  4. Make sure the collaboration is  Win/Win!  Both parties need to benefit in some way from the collaborative endeavor.  If both parties are not receiving clearly defined benefits from the collaboration then it becomes either a one-sided charity project or a case of being used.
  5. Don’t say yes to a collaborative opportunity just because you feel honored by being asked!  We often get involved in things that we really don’t have time or passion for just because we were asked.  Learn to say no if the collaboration is really not in line with your mission and vision for this season.
  6. Maintain respect and integrity at all times!  Do not allow yourself to get so “common” with one another that you begin the process of transference of roles onto one another whether they be spousal, parental, etc.  Remember who your collaborative partner is at all times and function within the mutually agreed upon boundaries that the relationship requires.
  7. Don’t get in over your head!  If after a period of time you see that the collaboration is not working make sure you have the ability to sever the relationship without any hard feelings or bad blood.  You must come up with a way to handle conflict that is good for both parties that includes the option of ending the collaboration amicably.  In other words do not get stuck into a collaboration that you feel as though you don’t have a way out.  If you do then  you may begin to resent it and the other person which may cause you to leave in an inappropriate manner.
